Optimism
Well...
Last Monday I went down to Katie Fitzgeralds in Stourbridge to play some songs and hopefully score a solo gig down there. I seemed to have managed both of those things! Funnily enough all the songs I played were either Crashpoint songs or songs that we've played in Crashpoint but haven't really got that far with yet.
I started off with Keep Your Distance, which is one of Crashpoint's older songs and yet remains one of the two songs we've played at every single gig we did. It's also the one on the front page of my myspace site, which is why I was playing it tonight. It seemed to go down well, I'm not sure how well the instrumental section works without, er, instuments, but I played the song a lot better than I did last time I tried to play it live with just an acoustic guitar! Song profile on the blog archive, but if you can't be bothered to look at it, need to make it clear I didn't write the words to this, that was my ex-lead singer Emma.
Then I moved on to a song I wrote fairly recently called Bitterness, this was the first time I'd ever played it live and it was quite well received! A new venture for me as this is the first time for a long time I've deliberately written profanities into my songs, but I honestly couldn't think of anything else to write for this and to be fair it's quite a spiteful song. And yes, me telling somebody not to be bitter is like the pot calling the kettle black.
I wrapped it up with a song that I play almost every time I go an acoustic gig, called Prisoner Of My Mind. I don't know why it goes down so well because it's pretty much the most desolate wrist-slasher I play in any band, but for some reason it tends to be very well received. Tonight was no exception; I haven't played it live quite enough times for anybody to remember what the words are, but when I was singing the line 'You made the cut across my heart and it never healed, but that's alright because it doesn't bleed,' and saw people smiling and nodding to it... well, that's an experience I won't soon forget!
Got some photos to it as well of my old friend Stefan who was there, so thanks for that Stef, they're up on the site now so have a look. And Dale wants to book me back for a Wednesday, I should hopefully be hearing from him in the not-too-distant future.
